Signs of bed bugs, and what to do first
Bed bug bites alone are not a reliable sign, since other things cause similar marks. Finding the bugs or their traces is what confirms it.
What to look for
- Small reddish-brown or black spots on sheets and mattress seams.
- Tiny pale shed skins and small whitish eggs near seams and crevices.
- Live bugs: flat, oval, about the size of an apple seed.
- Itchy bites, often in lines or clusters, appearing after you sleep.
Where they hide
- Mattress seams, box spring, bed frame and headboard.
- Cracks in furniture near the bed, behind picture frames and along baseboards.
- Couches and chairs where people sit for long periods.
What to do first
- Do not throw out your bed. It will not solve the problem and can spread bugs through the building.
- Wash and dry bedding on high heat.
- Do not use store-bought bug bombs. They can scatter bed bugs into more rooms.
- In an apartment or condo, tell your landlord or property manager so neighbouring units can be checked.
